Let me save you years of trial and error in marketing.
Most ads? Completely useless at getting clients.
Some are funny. Some are visually stunning. Some are even iconic.
But if they don’t bring in paying customers… who cares?
Today, I’ll show you how to write an ad that works—an ad that gets leads, closes sales, and actually grows your business.
Let’s break it down.
Let’s start with the basics.
If I wanted to get you to buy something, would I:
1. Put on a clown suit to make you laugh?
2. Parade around with a cute puppy to win you over?
3. Blast dramatic music and use fancy slow-motion effects?
4. Stay vague about what I’m even selling?
If you answered NO to all of the above, congrats—you’re already ahead of most advertisers.
Because none of that sells.
Here’s what actually does.
Think of your ad like a salesperson.
Not an entertainer. Not a storyteller. A salesperson.
Now imagine you find a perfect prospect for your product or service, and you send a skilled salesman to talk to them.
What would he say?
What would he ask?
What points would he hit to get the prospect to take action?
Let’s use an example. Say we’re selling chiropractic care.
First, we identify who we’re targeting: People with back pain.
Now, we send our hypothetical salesman to talk to them.
What’s the first thing he should say?
How about… “Hi, does your back hurt?”
Simple. Direct. Cuts through the noise.
Writing ads can feel overwhelming when you’re staring at an empty page.
So here’s the trick: Start with a simple question that qualifies your prospect.
Some examples:
1. “Are you a business owner who wants more clients?”
2. “Does your back hurt?”
3. “Do you want to drop 10 pounds in the next 30 days?”
4. “Want to improve your golf swing?”
5. “Wish you could attract women effortlessly?”
Simple works.
Your goal isn’t to impress people with cleverness. It’s to grab attention and speak directly to the right audience.
By asking the right question, you instantly filter out people who aren’t interested—and hook the ones who are.
In Part 2, we’ll build on this and turn it into a fully fleshed-out ad that converts.
